Description
Elementals are one of the many species in Iaia. They are made of the ancient elements that have existed in Iaia for thousands of years. There are 8 types of elements that are the natural building blocks of this solar system. Each element has its own elemental. The 8 elements are as follows:
- Lava
- Fire
- Electricity
- Stone
- Ice
- Water
- Air
- Crystal
The magic system of Iaia is closely related to the elements. However, it is not an elemental based system. Having an understanding of the elements does aid in performing certain spells. In order to understand an element, you must understand what traits the element embodies.
Reactivity
THIS SECTION IS IMPORTANT TO UNDERSTANDING ELEMENTALS!!!
Though one might assume that elementals would be hazardous because of their high reactivity, elementals actually do not react with most materials. Over hundreds of thousands of years, the chemical compositions of the elements evolved with the world around them. But, the elementals themselves retained their original compositions from ancient times.
This is why they may sometimes be referred to as "ancient" due to their older structures. These compositions are different enough to the point that their bodies no longer have chemical reactions with most of the world around them.
(It has to do with the way elementals are made but that's a story for another day...)
However, because all of them are made of ancient elements, that means they still react with other elementals. It is usually advised to keep a minimum of 5 ft between elementals that are hazardous to each other. Interactions between elementals, such as crystal and stone elementals, obviously do not need to abide by this. But, elementals like fire and water should remain vigilant and safe!
Abilities
- As the first intelligent forms of life in Iaia, elementals are one of the few species that do not need to actively eat in order to stay alive.
- However, they do need to rest and will die without sleeping.
- Elementals also have natural resistance to whatever element they embody. Electricity elementals cannot get electrocuted, water elementals cannot drown, etc.
- All elementals have the ability to shapeshift. Their shapeshifting abilities are mostly powered by eating food (or food adjacent objects).
- Elementals can power their shapeshifting by sleeping, but eating is much more power efficient for shapeshifting.
- Once they run out of fuel, they can no longer shapeshift until they regain energy. When they overexert themselves shapeshifting, they become lethargic.
- This means they usually have to be very careful about what they decide to shapeshift into
- Each elemental specializes in a certain type of shapeshifting, but some elementals may share the same specialty.
- For example, lava elementals are very skilled at shapeshifting their limbs into usable tools.
- Elementals wield their elements naturally. Since elementals have control over this magic, they can attune these abilities to be non-ancient and react with the world around them.
- To illustrate, a fire elemental does not set an object on fire by touching it. But, if they so choose to cast a flame, then this flame will be able to catch objects on fire.
Lava
Lava elementals tend to be very large compared to the rest of the elementals. Even if lava is a destructive element, lava elementals (something something natural caretakers). They specialize in shapeshifting their limbs into tools or weapons. Very useful!

Fire
The fire elementals are closely related to the water elementals. They both share very simple anatomy that is structurally very similar. Though of course, physical contact with either water or fire elementals would result in very much pain! Both parties would feel a pain akin to an acid burn.
Water and fire elementals share many parallels. Fire elementals are all born male, whereas water elementals are born female. Fire elementals can come in any hue, even though orange fire elementals usually come to mind first. This also applies to water elementals.

Electricity
Electric elementals are the tiniest elementals of the eight! Their small size aids them in being able to travel across conductive materials, like power lines. However, they are easily able to shapeshift the size of their body to compensate. Though this type of shapeshifting is typically a bit more unstable and may be broken if enough pressure is applied.

Stone

Ice
Ice elementals are silent creatures and typically live outside larger civilizations. But besides that, their culture is very welcoming towards outsiders! They may not be talkers, but ice elementals will show others hospitality when they can. The Ice elementals are best at shapeshifting themselves into inanimate objects.

Water
The water elementals are closely related to fire elementals. Though these two elementals could severely harm each other, their features are quite similar! They both specialize in shapeshifting into other species. The water elementals are all born female, whereas fire elementals are born male. (Though if they wanted to be any other gender, they could transition).
Out of every elemental, water elementals have the largest population. There has also been some debate whether ice elementals and water elementals are actually the same species, but ultimately it has been agreed that they are different. Water elementals can come in any hue like fire elementals as well.
Except yellow.

History
Elementals were the first intelligent beings in all of Iaia. Though many lifeforms had already existed as elemental creatures, none could experience critical thinking. That was, until elementals formed from the extremely concentrated elemental energy. Every other form of life came after the elementals.
However, because they were some of the earlier lifeforms in Iaia, certain belief systems may view elementals as primal, unintelligent creatures who are too stupid to use their abilities wisely. Relatively newer species (some, not all) will hold these beliefs. Though in the more recent years, this notion has become much less intense in Iaia. The intensity varies by location.
Known Elementals
The following are the canonically confirmed Elementals with names
Trivia
- The whole fire elementals being born male and water elementals being born female comes from Fireboy and Watergirl lol
- Elementals are definitely the most narratively complex species in Pseudocide because of how they interact with each other and the world.
